Body Issues: Not a “Girlie” Thing

Body Issues: Strong Enough for Women, but Can Weaken Men too

Here’s my justification in saying that “People are people. We have more similarities than differences.” For a long time I thought that we–as women–were the only ones who had body issues. But after extensively listening to men, whether in direct conversation or listening to them talk to each other, I see it can weigh them down too.

Men open up to me like this frequently. A man I know recently said “I gained a lot of weight. I look terrible.” He talked about it all day. I feel privileged that someone would trust me with this sensitive information.

Men, I love you for your flaws, not in spite of them. We all have insecurities, and sometimes they’re the things that people like most about us.

There are at least two reasons I can see (at this point) why men don’t like to open up to us in relationships (friendships or romantic). 1) He doesn’t trust you enough with that information—yet. 2) Maybe he likes you so much that he doesn’t want to blow it with him looking insecure. A lot of times, guys won’t share things because they think it makes them appear “weak” and it means they’re “less manly” in our eyes.

You’re more of a man when you’re open and honest about your inner truths and the things that are going on in your life. Recently, I discovered that one of the most attractive qualities in a man (for me) is emotional health and openness.

Where society says you’re “weak” you’re actually stronger. It takes a strong person to be honest, to admit their mistakes or even to disclose a personal insecurity. It opens the door for a friendship. Think of how exposing your insecurities can do help others break free. It’ll make them feel more at ease and like you more.

Men, there are some really amazing women who aren’t superficial and don’t put that much stock in weight, height, physical appearance or even in the amount of money you make. I don’t know about you, but I need honesty, loyalty, and integrity. Work on the inside of yourself, because those are the things that are going to last! These are the things we will love about you!
